Master Plan for Archerfield

Government Approves Master Plan

Click to enlarge - Airport Management BuildingThe long awaited 'Master Plan' on the future direction of Archerfield has now been approved by the Federal Government with a copy available for viewing at the airport management building on the airfield

It is in "draft" format at the moment however it is expected that a 'hard copy' version will be published and made available to the public in about 4 weeks along with a CD version now under consideration by management

For aviators there are no major changes to the airfield in the near future or in the medium to long term future for that matter

Perusal of the draft document by the News Desk shows that there are various options suggested with most 'open' for discussion

One such 'consideration' is the 04/22 runway complex that involves three options - two out of the three drafts indicated the 04 runway threshold would be repositioned and the last option was to 'reposition' a complete new runway further to the south-west along the present 04/22 direction - the options are:-

  1. Reposition the 04L and 04R threshold further north east to allow taxi access for aircraft operating on the 10/28 runways

  2. Removing 04L/22R system completely and repositioning the 04R threshold on the remaining 04R/22L further north as in above

  3. Remove both of the current 04/22 grass runways and replace them with one sealed runway overlaying the 10/28 complex which also involves transposing this complete new system further to the south-west

News Desk Observation
In all suggested cases there appears to be a reduction in available runway length for the 04/22 runway complex

Options one and two are worth a mention as been 'interesting' to a beginner pilot

With the strip length reduced and on a hot summer's day when the 04's are in heavy use and the density height of the airfield is up in the thousands of feet - the take-off and climb-out of the training 'puddle jumpers' and similar low powered aircraft are bound to create some 'excitement' for pilots as they try to maintain a safe flying height over the populated residential area to the north-east of AF and the associated rising terrain!
