USA's First Flight Enactment

December 18
After 100 years and at the same place and at the same time - the much publicised and costly replica of the Wright Flyer trying to recreate the first flight of a heavier-than-air flying machine failed when it was unable to gain sufficient airspeed

"In front of 35,000 visitors (still wet from a morning downpour) and millions of worldwide television viewers - the very expensive, very time consuming project ended its historic journey into the past slightly damaged and in a puddle at the end of a 200-foot portable runway/rail"

British pilot Polly Vacher offered Johanson her emergency avgas she had sent to the base when it was apparent the Kiwis and Yanks would not help with fuel to get him home
