Russian Yak-9's First Flight

A modern re-manufacture of the WW11 Yak-9 Russian fighter made it's first flight from the Hart's Flying Museum Hangar to-day for the excited Honda Vice-President owner after he had waited 3 years for all of the painstaking work associated with this type of flying machine to be completed

The 2 seat Yak fighter is fitted with a liquid cooled, supercharged, USA re-manufactured 1450hp V12 Allison engine and is only one of about 6 currently flying in the world

Fire-Ant Baiting Bell-47 Down

April 3 
A Bell 47 helicopter dropping fire ant baits for the Primary Industries Department crashed into Schultz's canal alongside Brisbane airport around mid-day

The 2 on board the chopper survived after extracting themselves from the submerged machine and were treated for suspected back injuries and taken to hospital

Initial reports of sabotage to the Bell were later found to be unsubstantiated by police

Shopping Centre Menace to Jets

April 1 
A 19yo male was arrested by the OZ Federal Police in a Perth shopping centre last week and charged with making hoax radio transmissions to aircraft and to the Perth control tower

The youth - from the southern Perth suburb of Lynwood - was detained after police conducted a surveillance operation at the shopping centre

The hoax calls were allegedly purported to be from aircraft seeking clearances to enter controlled airspace including landing clearances and permission to cross active runways

Gyrocopter Disintegrates in Flight

April 4 
A Boonah based Gyro 'copter pilot was killed when his homebuilt machine fell apart the air near Esk about 37nm North West of Archerfield

A witness reported "..I looked up to see which way it was going and it was pretty high up ..next minute there was an explosion up in the air and it came tumbling down"

The pilot was thrown clear of the machine before it crashed
