Back-Flip on Control Towers

Media reports have Airservices Australia - who handle our air traffic control in OZ - recommending changes to the new airspace system introduced last November including the re-introduction of manned control towers at some of the smaller regional airports that handle passenger jet traffic

"Federal Transport Minister John Anderson says it is highly likely the Government will adopt the changes"

Control towers were 'de-manned' by Airservices in "unprofitable" areas a few years back as a cost cutting measure

Aero Commander Lost in Tassie

February 20 
A twin-engine Aero Commander en-route from Hobart to Devonport has crashed near Table Mountain in Tasmania

Reports have the pilot as a young 21 year-old female who held a commercial licence and was the only person on board the freight/charter aircraft


The young pilot did not survive the impact

Ultra-lights Claim More Lives

February 16 
Three lives lost in light-weight minimum control flying machines over the week-end

Two lives were lost in a powered ultra-light in northern NSW and one in a hang-glider in Victoria

The ultralight crashed a paddock south of the town of Coraki near Ballina in NSW and burst into flames - the 58-year-old pilot and 43-year-old female passenger who were locals - died on impact

Sound Barrier Blast from the Past

February 20 
Chuck Yeager - made famous by being the first person to break the sound barrier back in the '40s - is being sued by three of his four children over ownership of a 1.2-hectare $US1.35 million Penn Valley California ranch

Chuck now aged 81 married 45-year-old Victoria Scott D'Angelo in August last year after his previous wife Glennis - with whom he fathered four children - died of cancer in 1990

"Yeager says his children are simply upset because his new wife would be entitled to his money when he dies"
