GPS Error in Benalla PA-31T Accident

September 1
The ATSB has released a preliminary report on the Piper Cheyenne accident near Benalla in Victoria on July 28 that claimed the lives of all 6 persons on board - previous report HERE

The pilot appears to have been using a GPS for navigation as "The route flown did not pass directly over any ground based navigation aids"

It is the opinion of this News Desk that EITHER the pilot was unaware of a change to the Lat/Long position of Benalla in the GPS and commenced an approach as normal -

OR someone else had changed the Lat/Long in a deliberate act of sabotage

Map-reading GPS linked software utilising a lap-top computer would have alerted the pilot that something was amiss - Refer News Desk report of 1997 click HERE (Sunday 9th)

Go Fly Your Jet-Powered Self

September 7
Interesting news article going around the globe at the moment is the latest in "pilots" where you become the aircraft and "fly" by strapping a wing onto your back - exit a jump aircraft as high as possible - unfold the "wing" and power up the 2 large model jet engines strung beneath the wing

"After dropping out of a Pilatus at an altitude of 4000m the dream comes true for the "pilot" when he manages horizontal flight at 1600m from the ground for more than 4 minutes at 100 kts"

Controls were fitted to the wing enabling the pilot to electronically manipulate the wingtips for either diving or gliding
