F-111C in Wheels-Up Landing at Amberley Military Air-Base

July 18  2006
A recent RAAF graduate of the General Dynamics F-111 pilot course was put to the test at Amberley military air base west of Archerfield when one of the aircraft's wheels - eventually reported correctly as the left main - fell-off shortly after take-off

The air base went into full emergency procedure and 3 hours later the aircraft was allowed to land

It was a classic text-book landing utilising the machine's arrester hook to capture a cable strung across the end of the runway

Typical aircraft carrier approach and landing - just had no water or wheels to worry about!

The 29-year-old pilot along with his 32-year-old navigator did not appear to be injured

The 2 seat trainer has been under development for a number of years - originally based at Archerfield where early design work and structural testing was carried out - the company associated with the manufacture of the machine transferred to a newly built hangar at Kingaroy earlier this year
