Poles Locate Wartime Aircraft Carrier Wreck in Baltic Sea
Germany's Only Carrier - Graf Zeppelin - Positively Identified

July 29  2006
A Polish firm searching for oil in the Baltic Sea has discovered the wreck of a German warship which turned out to be the Graf Zeppelin - one of Hitler's grandiose plans building aircraft carriers for WW11

It was designed to have a complement of 50 aircraft consisting of Messerschmitt Me-109T fighters Junkers Ju-87C dive bombers and Fieseler Fi-167 torpedo bombers

The German carrier was launched in December 1938 - it was never completed nor commissioned and did not contribute to Hitler's war effort

The Soviet Union eventually used the vessel for target practise in 1947 - "it remained afloat after 24 bombs had been dropped on it and had to be finished off with torpedoes"
