Legendary World War II Fighter Ace Bobby Gibbes Final Departure

The legendary wartime fighter ace Bobby Gibbes - a true-blue Australian and one of the most colourful characters of the era and the most decorated pilot of World War II - passed away at the Mona Vale Hospital a few days ago after failing to recover from a recent stroke

He was 90 years-of-age

At age 80 Bobbie constructed a twin-engine single-seat Cri Cri home-built aircraft in his lounge room and then had to dismantle part of the house to get it out

Ultralight Tragedy at Howard Airpark - 2 Killed - Allegro Ultralight Clips Trees

Queensland Fire and Rescue have advised that an Allegro ultralight aircraft hit trees at the end of the runway shortly after take-off at what appears to be the Cherrum Airpark at Howard - inland from QLD's Sunshine Coast - impacting the ground and bursting into flames

 
A male and female on board the imported 2-seater were unable to escape before the machine was engulfed in flames - media reports indicate the fibreglass constructed ultralight cartwheeled after clipping trees above a road after clearing the airstrip - an engine problem is suspected

Helicopter Pilot Injured in Crop-Duster Accident at Walkerston Central QLD

A crop-dusting helicopter pilot has been injured and taken to the Mackay Base Hospital after his machine impacted the ground during a close-to-the-ground manoeuvre

 
Media reports indicate the chopper may have struck power lines during a spray run - the pilot escaped with only minor injuries

Holden Lightship Airship Returns to Archerfield

Archerfield was once again 'graced' with the visit to the airport of what is the largest outdoor TV screen south of the equator 'stuck' onto the side of the Holden sponsored Florida-based Lightship Group A-170 Blimp - Australians were the first audience in the world to view the 914 inch LED screen

 
The million-dollar airship has harassed several sporting groups with its advertising activities including the Cricket Australia and the AFL - executives were annoyed when the airship buzzed the AFL Grand Final in 2006 - it was sponsored by rival motoring group Toyota
