Col Pay Feared Dead in Crash at Lake Liddell in NSW Hunter Region

Col Pay - one of Australia's most experienced and well known agricultural and warbird pilot - is feared dead after the Air Tractor fire-bomber aircraft he was in crashed into Lake Liddell north-west of Singleton

 
Col's aviation business - Pay's Air Service - carries out fire-spotting and bushfire water-bombing as one of his services from the base at Scone where he has a number of warbird aircraft including the P-51D "07"

Reports indicate Col was experimenting with a water scoop attached to his Air Tractor AT802 crop-duster that he had converted into a water fire-bombing role - "..it's not clear that it contributed to the crash"

75 year-old Col was considered an "icon" within the aviation industry with extensive agricultural flying experience - "He had more than half a century of flying experience and one of the most experienced pilots"

A 40th birthday present flight turned into a real drama for the recipient when the engine of the PA-28 Piper she was in failed - "It was returning from Anglesea when it lost power and tried to make an emergency landing on the golf course"

 
The emergency landing was successful only to the point that the 4-on-board escaped with minor injuries - the aircraft was not so lucky - it had departed Moorabbin airport a little earlier in the day and was returning to base when it was totalled
