MICROLIGHT PILOT UNABLE TO 'MOTHER' CRANES DUE REGULATIONS

Ten young whooping cranes on their first migratory flight under the care of a microlight 'mother' crane have been grounded in Alabama by the USA's federal regulator after having flown more than halfway to their winter home in Florida

The regulator wants to investigate whether the journey violates regulations because the pilot was being paid by a conservation group to lead the cranes instead of working for free

"Pilots of Operation Migration's weight-shift controlled flexible-wing microlight are licensed to fly the aircraft because that's the category it falls under - FAA regulations prohibit such sport aircraft from being flown for the benefit of a business or charity as only pilots with commercial licenses can fly for hire"
