SEARCH NEAR WOLLONGONG FOR MISSING WEDDERBURN ULTRALIGHT

NSW Police attached to Wollongong Local Area Command received reports of a loud bang overhead between Bulli Tops and Sublime Point and a report of a missing single-seater aircraft from Wedderburn

"A command post has been set up at Sublime Point Lookout" - "While nothing has been found at this point police have received reports of a missing single-seater aircraft with one man on board"

UPDATE - ULTRALIGHT LOCATED - PILOT DECEASED

Police rescue teams have located the wreck of the ultralight on the Illawarra escarpment - a mobile phone carried by the pilot helped pinpoint the location

Media reports have a "loud-bang" heard in the area that suggests an in-flight breakup caused by exceeding the design airspeed or contact with vertical "real-estate" in non-visual conditions

"Shortly after 8am today a police team searching an escarpment near Austinmer located the wreckage of a plane..." - The pilot - 57-year-old Robert Greig "had been flying planes for four decades and had amassed thousands of hours in the air"

The single-seat aircraft was not equipped with the necessary instruments nor certified for flight in "bad-weather"

PILOT TO CARRY OUT CRASH INVESTIGATION INTO FATAL SPITFIRE ACCIDENT

One of OZ's most experienced light aircraft pilots - Mal Beard - has taken on the task of trying to establish the reason for a crash that killed well respected 75-year-old pilot Professor Barry Uscinski near Gympie aerodrome in 2010 after all official reports on the accident were inconclusive and the Gympie Coroner Maxine Baldwin clearing Dr Uscinski of any blame

"Mrs Baldwin was scathing of investigation processes adopted by almost everyone involved, from Gympie police to the Recreational Aviation Australia and the Civil Aviation Safety Authority"

"Mr Beard said he will examine every part of the plane, an 80% scale Spitfire replica, to find who or what killed his friend and one-time student, Barry Uscinski"
