AirCentre Aviation News Digest
APRIL 1998
Wednesday 1
Still on the "outstanding" agenda from last month
(and the past 12 months) are the details on the "sale"
of Archerfield which are yet to be released by the Federal Government
. . . . . this not-unusual phenomenon by the bureaucracy could be associated with
the aviation term "flying in a headwind"
. . . . . the longer you are in the headwind, the longer it takes you to get there
And just because you are pointing in the right direction doesn't necessarily mean to say that you
will get there!
. . . . . the "headwind" can be greater than the T.A.S. if the machine (decision) is
that slow!
. . . . are we about to go back in time to when it all started ten
years ago to-day?
Tuesday 7
The Federal Government is expected to announce the new "Owner" of
Archerfield on Thursday
Meanwhile for those of you who may be interested (or disadvantaged) - the
airside refuelling depot is now operational
Also nearing completion is the Cafeteria car park where the "new owners" may consider
adding a GAIT (General Automotive Infrastructure Tariff) charge so as not to be seen as
prejudicial against other users of the airfield and naturally it would have to be based on
the same method used with the General Aviation Infrastructure Tariff which is applied to all
other motor vehicles (aircraft) using this airfield
. . . . . . this means that if you park your vehicle in the Cafeteria parking bay
you can expect an account in the mail some time later for the GAIT charge which is currently
around the $6.00 per day mark for the average 4 seat light aircraft using similar facilities
airside
. . . . . anyone for a "big mac"?
Then
Dec '97 and
now
Friday 10
Archerfield has finally been "Sold"

. . . . . . the headwind continues
Friday 17
The local operators on the airfield are all in "wonder" mode
The recent sale of the 'Field to an unknown investor has the owners of flying training
schools and maintenance organisations wondering about their future and that of the airfield
The apparent low price received for the "rights" to operate the airfield has many of the
aircraft owners also concerned
Some of their aircraft and associated business are valued around the same amount that was
obtained by the government in "selling" the airfield's future
. . . . . . "new" owners of businesses have a well known habit of increasing
rents to maximise returns on their investment
. . . . and monopolies such as is the case with Archerfield, could generate
returns well above what would be termed "normal" business expectations!
. . . . . and then if that's not enough, the "lease" can be resold
. . . . for a large profit of course!
Saturday 25
Anzac Day attracts the military to rest their weary rotors on Archerfield's
grass plains
Three "Huey" Helicopters call in for a short stay remaining in standby mode with engines
running
And the new "Fuel Truck" taxiway has been commissioned into
service after extensive and expensive "rebuilding"
. . . . . . this "new" taxiway appears to be able to carry a load greater than
that of the main runway
. . . . . next thing you know the 'Fields now famous
GroundCrafts will use this area for V1 trials!
January '98 and now
The Military
"At Eease" or is that "Stand Easy"?!
